The 49ers can finish off the Dolphins' dwindling playoff hopes with a road victory in Week 16, and here's how fans can tune in live.
The 6-8 Miami Dolphins are effectively in the same position the San Francisco 49ers are in heading into Week 16: not technically eliminated from the playoffs but essentially out of the running, for all intents and purposes.
The NFL schedule makers certainly thought both teams would be in the thick of the postseason hunt at this point in the season, which made a matchup between the teacher, Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan, and his long-time protege, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, a juicy one.
Especially for those who love innovative offenses.
Yet both teams have endured plenty of offensive challenges this season. And with the brink of playoff elimination looming for both sides, the idea of being a spoiler is something Shanahan and McDaniel have to embrace as they prepare to face each other on Sunday, Dec. 22. at Hard Rock Stadium.
San Francisco at least has the benefit of a somewhat-lengthy break, having played on Thursday Night Football in Week 15, which should help mitigate the East Coast travel. And, perhaps, the distraction of linebacker De'Vondre Campbell's on-field actions during that particular game might serve to unite the rest of the locker room.
Either way, Shanahan and Co. are playing for pride in what's essentially a meaningless game that'll propel the 49ers a little closer to a premature offseason.
