The San Francisco 49ers have yet to sign their franchise quarterback Brock Purdy to a contract extension. Seemingly everyone has a take on how much Purdy should make, including washed-up cornerback Patrick Peterson.
The recently retired cornerback went on the Up & Adams show and was asked by host Kay Adams about whether he thinks Purdy should make $50 million per year with his new contract.
Peterson's response was interesting, to say the least:
Patrick Peterson on whether or not Brock Purdy is worth being a $50 million guy:

In the clip when asked if he thinks Purdy is a $50 million guy, Peterson says, "Honestly, no. But, what these quarterbacks are going for right now, that's kind of like the going rate."
However, when shown a graphic of the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL, Peterson did acknowledge that Purdy is ahead of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and even went so far as to imply Purdy should make more than Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen since Purdy has been to a Super Bowl and Allen has not.
The eight-time Pro Bowler concluded by saying that he personally would not pay Purdy $50 million per year, but that he will probably end up being paid that much.
This is more than a little rich coming from Peterson considering he got embarrassed by Purdy and the Niners in Week 1 of the 2023 regular season when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Leading up to the game, Peterson predicted that he was going to get an interception off of Purdy. Instead, the Niners made him look silly three separate times during the game, most memorably when Purdy delivered an absolute dime to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in the end zone as he was being covered by Peterson.
Now, Peterson was in the twilight of his career when Purdy embarrassed him. Long gone were the days when the former Arizona Cardinal was regarded as one of the most elite cornerbacks in the game.
Yet, it is still comical to see him throw shade at Purdy from a golf cart as he enjoys retirement. Perhaps that public embarrassment still does not sit right with him and he refuses to believe that Purdy can ball, but nonetheless the washed up corner clearly does not think Purdy will be worth whatever contract he gets.
Most projections have Purdy earning north of $50 million per year. That is a lot of money, but Purdy has proven that he can be among the best quarterbacks in the game when both he and his offensive weapons are healthy.
After the Niners signed tight end George Kittle to an extension, getting Purdy's contract locked down seems like the next logical step for the front office. It may rankle Peterson's feathers, but a lot of 49ers fans would love to see a deal with Purdy get done as quickly as possible no matter the price.
