The San Francisco 49ers are back in training camp as they prepare for the 2026 campaign. With that being the focus for this team, the trade market is always a way to improve the roster.
And the latest trade request came from Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Vea requested a trade from Tampa Bay after failing to agree to a contract extension. He's going into the final year of his deal and wants to cash in. And while the Niners would have to cough up some money in addition to trade compensation to acquire Vea, this should entice them.

Ted Nguyen of The Athletic also revealed on X that he heard from a source that Vea wants to "go to a California team or the Raiders."

And considering that Vea was born in California, this would immediately help the 49ers in their pursuit to land Vea. Right after the request, San Francisco has been floated as a destination.
The Niners traded for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa this offseason, but the spot next to him is up for grabs. Alfred Collins could be someone who takes that role, but getting Vea would instantly improve this defense.
Vea has been in the NFL for eight years, playing in 112 games (107 starts). In those outings, he posted 256 total tackles, 48 TFLs, 79 QB hits, and 35 sacks. He's listed at 6-foot-4, 347 pounds and is a true run stuffer along the interior. Vea will eat up blocks, which allows his teammates to fill in and make plays.
Could you imagine Vea doing that up front and clearing things up for Fred Warner at the second level?
That would be a dream, yet it wouldn't come cheap. The top three highest-paid defensive tackles in the NFL are getting at least $28 million per year, which is likely where Vea would want to come in. That may be difficult for the Niners. According to Over the cap, San Francisco is currently $35 million over the cap in 2027 and $20 million over the cap in 2028.
The 49ers would have to do some salary cap gymnastics to free up the money, but it could be worth it. Vea is a true difference-maker and would elevate the entire defense. He's a two-time Pro Bowler and knows how to shut things down along the interior of the D-line.
Just last season, he finished with a 72.8 overall grade (20th among 134 graded defensive linemen), a 77.0 pass-rush grade (12th among 134 graded defensive linemen), and a 62.5 run-defense grade (33rd among 134 graded defensive linemen) on PFF. He also generated 51 total pressures and 39 hurries across 17 games. The Washington product has played in 14-plus games in five straight seasons.
There's no question Vea would improve the defense, and with him asking out, San Francisco should certainly see what it takes to bring him over.
