The Trent Williams saga that has stretched over the last few years seems to be coming to a climax. After failing to reach an agreement with the left tackle on a new deal, the San Francisco 49ers are open to trading him away this offseason, per Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport said, "The 49ers are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams, sources say, if the situation doesn’t get resolved. A resolution has not been easy and Williams is frustrated with the process. He’s due $32M in salary with a $38M+ cap number."
Even at 37 years old, the former All-Pro should have a healthy trade market. He's still a quality starter for a team in need. If he does get moved, the New England Patriots seem like an obvious destination.
Trent Williams could land with Patriots after 49ers trade rumors surface
Williams and the 49ers have had multiple contract standoffs over the years. This development isn't necessarily surprising, but it does feel like the two sides could finally go their separate ways. If reports are true, a trade is very much on the table.
It's difficult to speculate what the 49ers might get in return in the event of a trade, simply because there aren't many examples of 37-year-old tackles getting moved. Still, it seems likely that San Francisco could receive a mid-round draft pick in the deal.
In terms of suitors, the Patriots are a logical destination. 2025 first-round pick Will Campbell had an embarrassing playoff run, leading many analysts to project a move inside to guard. If New England is looking for an established pass protector to help out Drake Maye, Williams is the best option they're going to find.
The veteran tackle would immediately become the best member of the Patriots' offensive line, adding security to a relatively young group.
Under Mike Vrabel, the Patriots have shown a willingness to make big moves. Last offseason, they spent more than any other team in free agency in an effort to accelerate their path to contending. It clearly worked, leading to a Super Bowl run, so don't be surprised if they go all-in again in 2026.
Other teams to look out for include the Cleveland Browns and the Kansas City Chiefs, though both of those teams have plenty of other holes to fill.
Williams and the 49ers may still work out a new deal before the offseason is over. But if San Francisco does trade him, New England is a logical destination.
