The San Francisco 49ers, in the middle of another tough battle with the Philadelphia Eagles, dug deep in their bag at the start of the fourth quarter. Trailing Philly 16-10 in a Wild Card matchup, San Francisco snapped the ball, and Brock Purdy handed it off to Skyy Moore who was motioning across the field. Moore then tossed the ball to fellow wide receiver Jauan Jennings on a reverse, who then uncorked a beautiful throw to Christian McCaffrey for a go-ahead touchdown.
The play call was excellent, and the execution was even better. Tom Brady’s reaction to the play was just as good. The NFL legend served as the color commentator for the game, and he immediately recognized the trickery, but couldn’t contain his excitement. As the play unfolded, Brady went, “Oh…Ohhh…OHHHHH,” reacting just like many of the fans watching.

Tom Brady couldn’t contain his excitement for 49ers trick play
Brady eventually found more words and broke down the play. He praised Jennings for really selling the fake by tucking the ball, before making a really great throw under pressure, and was amazed by CMC’s impressive over-the-shoulder catch that he had to go to the ground to secure. Brady also questioned why Eagles’ safety Reed Blankenship took his eyes off the star running back.
While a lot had to go right for the play to be a success, the star of the trick play was Jauan Jennings. The 49ers have turned to the veteran wideout before to throw the ball, because he has a history at quarterback. After his touchdown pass on Sunday, NFL analyst Gregg Rosenthal reminded fans that Jennings was a four-star dual threat quarterback coming out of high school. He was such a good prospect that he was ranked ahead of current star quarterbacks Sam Darnold, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson.
While those three went on to become first-round, Pro-Bowl quarterbacks, Jauan Jennings made his transition to receiver at Tennessee. The change has served him well, but his throwing prowess is still coming in handy.
