In a recent ranking of NFL uniforms by Sports Illustrated, the San Francisco 49ers came in second place to the Los Angeles Chargers. Obviously, it’s a bit subjective and most fans are going to be partial to their own team, but most people probably agree the Niners have some great uniforms.
Their default home and road uniforms are sharp and feel new and modern while also not being all too different from the uniforms they wore back in the 1980s. The throwback 1994 jerseys, both the red and white variety, look really good and have become a go-to favorite for San Francisco in recent years.
The new “rivalry” uniforms are a bit divisive, and the fact the one time the Niners have worn them in a game was when they got beat by the Seattle Seahawks and the offense was almost completely shut down doesn’t really help how fans feel about them, but they still look pretty decent if one can forget about that game.
The one thing the 49ers are missing, though, is a true throwback look that honors the 1980s uniforms.
Fans who have played the Madden franchise know that for years it has always been an option to wear the 1980s retro look in the game.
The 49ers haven’t really done that in recent memory in an actual game. Maybe that’s because their default is pretty similar to the 1980s look, but it would be cool if they broke out the striped sock again and maybe made just a few alterations to pay homage to the franchise’s golden era.
Of course, there have been some other looks in the franchise’s history that the team doesn’t really pay homage to either. The early-to-mid 2000s look, which featured maroon jerseys, always felt a little bit odd, so the Niners probably won’t be bringing maroon back into the equation anytime soon.
Expect to see the white-on-white 90s throwback next season, especially early in the year when the Niners have three home games at Levi’s Stadium in September following their Week 1 contest in Australia.
In recent years, the Niners have requested to wear that all-white uniform because of how hot it gets at Levi’s during the first month or two of the season, so it may not be until October that we see the team wear its traditional red jersey in Santa Clara.
The 49ers have some of the sharpest uniforms in the NFL, but if they just added a throwback look that played into the 1980s a little bit more and wore them maybe once a year, then they would have the best uniform collection of any team in the league.
