A surprising name emerges in Jets' quest for a new head coach

The idea of plucking Kyle Shanahan's assistants is still alive and well despite the Niners' less-than-stellar season.

Brian Griese isn't exactly viewed as a hot name in future head-coaching circles, but the Jets seem to be interested in the 49ers' quarterbacks coach.

Typically, teams in search of a new head coach look at other teams' coaching staffs that managed to boast successful records the previous season.

With a 6-11 finish to 2024, the San Francisco 49ers wouldn't initially be considered a grocery store for potential coaching candidates.

However, the coach-needy New York Jets apparently think otherwise.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has already sent a number of assistants on to bigger and better jobs elsewhere, most notably having coordinators like Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans and Mike McDaniel all find their head-coaching careers after successful tenures with the Niners.

It's possible quarterbacks coach Brian Griese is the next name on that list.

Jets request interview with 49ers QB coach Brian Griese

The Jets have actively been seeking a new head coach since dismissing Saleh earlier this season. Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich will have a shot, of course, joining an ever-growing list of potential candidates that already includes notable names like Arthur Smith, Rex Ryan, Kliff Kingsbury, Brian Flores and Ron Rivera.

Add Griese to that list.

According to a Monday report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Gang Green requested an interview with San Francisco's QBs coach:

Griese, who joined Shanahan's staff in 2022 and is credited with helping quarterback Brock Purdy develop into a Pro Bowler, has never served as a head coach or coordinator anywhere else.

An 11-year veteran of the league, Griese turned into a TV analyst before accepting his current role with the Niners.

New York is set to experience plenty of offseason changes, including a likely parting of ways with future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which only adds to the drama surrounding a Jets team that has dealt with plenty of it in recent years.

It seems the Jets are proverbially leaving "no stone unturned" in their search, though, meaning Griese is a name to at least be explored.

Even if he only has, at best, an outside chance of landing the job.
