Stefon Diggs' latest stance should have 49ers considering pre training camp signing

The San Francisco 49ers made a big move in free agency when they signed Mike Evans, but the receiver room could still use some firepower. Evans, Ricky Pearsall, and Christian Kirk are expected to be the starting trio, with rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling fighting to get snaps.

Despite these players already in the room, San Francisco could use another playmaker, and free agent Stefon Diggs could be the answer.

On his YouTube channel, Diggs made it clear he believes he's better than other WR2s in the NFL.

"My opinion, I can compete with anybody... You can't name a No. 2 better than me."

And with the expectation that Evans will be the No. 1 for this offense, the idea of Diggs being added to the equation would only improve this passing attack.

Stefon Diggs' argument should give 49ers reason to consider signing before training camp

While San Francisco has high hopes for Pearsall, he hasn't played in more than 11 games in either season. And it's a similar case for Kirk, as he hasn't suited up in more than 13 games over the past two seasons.

Rolling into the year fully banking on them is risky, which makes the idea of signing Diggs that more appealing. Last year, he was with the New England Patriots and produced fairly well, one year after tearing his ACL.

Across 17 games, he finished with 85 catches (102 targets) for 1,013 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He played a pivotal role for Drake Maye and also showed he still has room to be an effective playmaker week in and week out.

And over the course of Diggs' 11-year career, he has been a highly productive player. In 161 games, Diggs reeled in 942 receptions for 11,504 receiving yards and 74 receiving touchdowns. Not only has he been successful in multiple locations, but he also has the skill set to line up in several spots and still be impactful.

The 49ers already have a No. 1 in Evans, but you can never have enough weapons in the NFL. Diggs' comments also show that he is ready to embrace the WR2 role, which should only enhance the case to sign him.

They will already have to begin the season without star tight end George Kittle due to a torn Achilles. That's a gut punch, so the thought of having a weapon like Diggs in the mix would only bolster a pass attack that could use another pair of hands.

It would also allow Stribling to focus on his development and ease into the NFL landscape. Having another veteran receiver for Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy to work with could go a long way, especially in a division with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. Making an addition to improve your roster in preparation for that battle is worthwhile.

Diggs is someone the 49ers should consider adding before training camp starts and hand him a one-year deal.
