Stats expose harsh truth about Brock Purdy failing in clutch moments

Don't read this if you're sensitive about Brock Purdy.

No doubt, Brock Purdy is the best quarterback the San Francisco 49ers have had for a very, very long time. And he's rightfully earned the lucrative $265 million contract extension given to him during the offseason.

But, even Purdy has his faults.

The Niners' 26-21 Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars highlighted a certain aspect about Purdy's game that's becoming awfully concerning. Perhaps it's part of a greater picture, but it's becoming hard to ignore the reality that San Francisco's franchise signal-caller doesn't exactly have that keen knack for coming up big late in games, particularly when his team is playing from behind.

In fact, one might argue Purdy has been downright mediocre when the 49ers are trailing late in ballgames.

And the numbers prove it.

Brock Purdy isn't coming through in the clutch (and stats prove it)

Trailing the Jags by five with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Purdy and Co. had a legit chance to engineer a final drive to give the Niners yet another unbelievable victory when all seemed doomed.

Except the quarterback's third and final turnover (a fumble, in this case) ensured no fourth-quarter comeback would materialize.

The Associated Press' Josh Dubow highlighted Purdy's fourth-quarter career when trailing by one to eight points, and the net results are, well... not good:

Over 30 percent of his 26 such fourth-quarter drives have resulted in a turnover, and the lowly 63.7 passer rating in these instances is downright alarming.

Granted, some of this could be attributed to head coach Kyle Shanahan, whose own fourth-quarter comeback numbers are alarming in and of themselves. So, unless Purdy eventually winds up playing under another head coach at some point in his career, we may never know who bears more responsibility.

That said, Purdy is ultimately the one trying to make plays on the field in those clutch moments.

To date, the net results have been anything but positive.
