The San Francisco Giants are certainly going through their share of pains this season, way below the .500 mark and watching whatever dim hopes for a Wild Card spot fade away, and it's only just the beginning of June.
So, for fans of both the Giants and San Francisco 49ers, patiently waiting until football kicks off this autumn might be the only solace.
To shake things up, the Giants opted to hire the Houston Astros' former third-base coach, Gary Pettis, who has spent plenty of time performing such a role and hopefully will ignite some sort of a spark for the orange and black.
Gary Pettis is officially the new third base coach. The Oakland native has more than two decades of MLB experience and plenty of experience at third. He’ll join the Giants tomorrow in Milwaukee.

For those Niners fans out there, you'll probably recognize the last name, and it probably won't generate too many fond memories.
SF Giants hire father of former 49ers WR Dante Pettis
Wide receiver Dante Pettis, the former Washington pass catcher whom San Francisco drafted in Round 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft—and traded up to get him—had himself quite the tumultuous career in the Bay Area.
Of course, he gave homage to his father during an impromptu batting practice his rookie year. But that first season at the pro level might've been something of an anomaly, as Pettis finished 2018 on a strong note, ultimately recording 27 catches for 467 yards and five touchdowns. That painted a positive picture heading into year two.
But nothing of the sort materialized.
It became clear in 2019 that Pettis had fallen out of favor with head coach Kyle Shanahan, ultimately turning into a late-season weekly inactive and someone who didn't even suit up for San Francisco's Super Bowl appearance in February of 2020.
The following offseason, Shanahan pretty much publicly declared Pettis in the "doghouse," and the receiver never regained his footing with the 49ers, ultimately finding himself waived the following November.
Since then, Pettis has bounced around the league with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints, never coming close to matching his rookie-year totals.
A failed second-round pick, no other way to put it for the Niners.
At least for his longstanding coach of a father, perhaps the junior Pettis can hope Gary Pettis is part of the Giants' much-needed solution.
