It's impossible to fully grasp the emotion going through San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw's head when he played such an integral role in defeating his former squad, the Denver Broncos, in Week 4.
Indeed, aside from just leading the Niners with 12 tackles in the 24-14 victory, Greenlaw made it a point to let Broncos head coach Sean Payton know how he felt after Denver released him last offseason, just one year into a three-year deal.
Greenlaw was part of two separate interactions with Payton, the first being an in-game jab at the coach to which Payton simply nodded his head.
But the bigger interaction was when Greenlaw attempted to confront Payton midfield after the game, shouting words before fellow linebacker Fred Warner managed to pull his linemate away from a would-be scuffle:

According to the San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch, Greenlaw said, "I told him to 'get the f*** off the field.' That’s it. 'Get the f*** off the field.'"
Needless to say, it was interesting to see how Payton would respond when pressed about the matter.
Sean Payton downplays incidents with Dre Greenlaw
Speaking with reporters after the game, Payton was asked about going up against Greenlaw after the tumultuous one-year relationship between the linebacker and Denver.
To his credit, Payton didn't toss any shade in Greenlaw's direction, and his response was about as civil as it could've been.
"No," Payton responded when asked if there was any animosity between him and Greenlaw. "And I said this to Kyle [Shanahan] afterwards, I think the world of him. I really love everything about him and he plays with that emotion. So, it's all good."

Perhaps Payton could've added something about how it was unfortunate things didn't work out in Denver, because according to Greenlaw, the Broncos coach hadn't spoken with him since November and "couldn’t be man to man and call my phone and say, 'We’re going to cut you.'"
Either way, that motivation certainly worked in the 49ers' favor. Despite plenty of early offensive miscues and shortcomings, Greenlaw and the Niners defense ultimately kept Payton's offense in check throughout the bulk of the contest.
Plus, understanding Greenlaw's own intensity surely helps put things into perspective, too, and at least Payton managed to acknowledge that despite not going any deeper.
