Seahawks' Mike Macdonald is awfully coy about having 49ers' number

At least the Hawks coach isn't bragging about shutting Brock Purdy down regularly.

There may be two serious areas of concern for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy when he's on the field: bad weather and Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald.

Macdonald has had no shortage of success versus Purdy and his offense, and not just in his current stead at the helm of the Hawks. Back in December of 2023 when the coach was the Baltimore Ravens' defensive coordinator, Purdy was slapped with one of his worst games as a pro—a four-interception embarrassment in which he was pulled for backup quarterback Sam Darnold in a one-sided loss.

Things haven't exactly fared better for the Niners' hurler since Macdonald took over in Seattle the following year.

Despite winning his first game against Macdonald's Seahawks in 2024, Purdy has since led San Francisco to a 1-3 record (including the divisional loss in January of 2026) with three touchdowns thrown against five interceptions. The last two times Purdy faced Seattle, he posted passer ratings of 64.9 and 54.6, respectively.

Pretty ugly.

Yet Macdonald isn't necessarily bragging about that, as he told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco from the American Century Championship golf tournament in Lake Tahoe.

Walloping the 49ers in the divisional round 41-6 was a key part in the Hawks' run toward winning the Super Bowl last February, yet Macdonald certainly didn't feel as if his team has the Niners' number.

"Every game has a life of its own," Macdonald told Maiocco. "Our players decided we wanted to play a certain way, and I wouldn't say 'we have the 49ers' number' or 'we don't.' Those games played out that way."

Despite Purdy's relative lack of success against his defenses, Macdonald remained outwardly complimentary of the Niners offense, too.

"There's a great detail in which they coach, and there's a precision to their offense, and there's a physicality to what they do, and it's complementary," Macdonald continued. "Everything's married off each other. All the route stems are married off each other. They vary their pass protections. The run game is diverse but complementary.

"Again, they're constantly evolving, so you have to keep pace with that, and it's not easy to do, and that's why they've been so successful."

Not so successful against Macdonald's Seahawks as of late, though.
