The Seattle Seahawks have hired San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Brian Fleury to be their next offensive coordinator. Fleury is set to replace Klint Kubiak who left Seattle to become the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

This move could set the Seahawks up for a fate that the Philadelphia Eagles just experienced.

The 2024 Eagles had a great season and steamrolled their opponents in the playoffs, including the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Then, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore departed to become the head coach of the New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia's offense collapsed.

Basically by all metrics, the Eagles were worse offensively in 2025. Running back Saquon Barkley was not the same, and Philly just could not get things going on that side of the ball basically the entire season despite having most of the same personnel.

Those issues got exposed in the playoffs as the Eagles faced the bruised and battered Niners defense -- a unit that was starting guys at linebacker who weren't on the roster on Thanksgiving -- in the Wild Card round and had a poor offensive showing as the 49ers upset them.

Clearly, the Eagles were not the same without Moore calling plays. Replacement coordinator Kevin Patullo took a lot of heat and was fired after the season by Philadelphia.

Perhaps something similar will play out with Fleury and the Seahawks.

Kubiak spent just one season in Seattle and was clearly able to find something that clicked with that unit. Seattle's defense deserves a lot of credit for that Super Bowl, but that offense did more than enough and won a couple of impressive shootouts against the Los Angeles Rams.

Even if Fleury is familiar with the type of offense that is run there, there is no guarantee that he will be able to come in and have the same success.

Maybe quarterback Sam Darnold will struggle in year two with Seattle since it will be a different play caller. He struggled earlier in his career as he was on bad teams and cycled through different play callers, but the Eagles showed in 2025 that even a good team can struggle if it doesn't have the right people in place.

The 49ers can only hope that the Seahawks will meet a similar fate as the 2025 Eagles. As long as Seattle's defense remains as solid as it was last season, they will be tough to beat even with an average offense.

But maybe this shakeup will lead to some struggles for San Francisco's rival. Fingers crossed!
