The Seattle Seahawks very annoyingly eked out a win on Wednesday night against the New England Patriots. Sam Darnold went down with a hip injury, and Drew Lock had to play the majority of the game, while Drake Maye tossed three fourth-quarter interceptions to basically hand it to Seattle.
The early prognosis is that Darnold avoided a major injury that could have ended his season, but Seattle does not know how long he will be out. Still, the Seahawks will probably want an experienced backup in the mix if Lock were to go down, which could lead them to none other than former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Wouldn’t that be something? Garoppolo spent the last few seasons as Matthew Stafford’s backup on the Los Angeles Rams, so it would continue his tour of the NFC West if he joined Seattle.
He already has a connection there, as Seattle’s offensive coordinator Brian Fleury was a longtime assistant coach in San Francisco. So there’s familiarity, and Garoppolo would probably at least be fairly comfortable in Fleury’s scheme.
Would Jimmy Garoppolo be a Seahawks fallback option at QB?
The question is whether Garoppolo wants to keep playing. There were retirement rumors throughout the offseason, and he’s already made quite a bit of money in his career, so does he really want to be Lock’s backup, assuming Darnold misses extended time?
In some best-case scenario, maybe he takes over for Lock, either due to injury or because Lock performs poorly. And then, Jimmy G plays well enough that he might earn another backup job because that’s pretty much his ceiling at this point in his career.
Maybe he wants to give it one more go, and perhaps a desire to potentially go head-to-head against the 49ers would give him the motivation to join Seattle. But he could just as easily decide to retire or just wait for a different opportunity.
Garoppolo may not get many better opportunities than this one, though. An injury on a team that just won a Super Bowl that has an offensive coordinator you’re familiar with? This may be Jimmy G’s last real shot at NFL relevance, so if he lets it pass, we may not hear about him much ever again.
It would be hilarious if he did sign with Seattle and ended up starting a game against the Niners. So just for that slim possibility, many fans will be hoping he decides to come out of his quasi-retirement to join San Francisco’s bitter rival.
