3 roster holes 49ers failed to solve in free agency (and why the draft can help)

There's still plenty of room for improvement...

The San Francisco 49ers were active in free agency, but they did not address every single roster hole on the team. Clearly, general manager John Lynch and Co. are counting on filling in the gaps via next month's NFL Draft.

This may not be a bad strategy.

The Niners knew they had to get some wide receivers, and they did just that by adding veterans Mike Evans and Christian Kirk.

They made more minor free-agent additions elsewhere, but three big holes remain.

Safety

The secondary was in a tough spot last season since San Francisco's pass rush was essentially non-existent; a young contingent of safeties, Malik Mustapha, Ji'Ayir Brown, and Marques Sigle, were exposed.

Ex-Niner Richard Sherman has been vocal about San Francisco's need to add a safety, and new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris could have his eye on some veteran free agents still available.

Dillon Thieneman could be a name to keep an eye on during the draft. He was a solid safety at Oregon, and the Niners had good luck drafting Deommodore Lenoir out of Eugene. So maybe, they could add another Duck to the secondary.

Edge rusher

Having a healthy Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams will help a lot at edge rusher, but the 49ers could clearly still improve at the position. Joey Bosa is still available and would make sense as a relatively affordable free-agent addition.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic has the Niners selecting Akheem Mesidor out of Miami with their first-round pick in a recent mock draft, so maybe they will spend yet another first-round pick to try and improve the defensive line.

Tight end

With George Kittle's status for the beginning of next season somewhat unclear, the 49ers would be smart to add more depth at the position. Maybe a one-year veteran stopgap would be a smart addition.

In the draft, top prospect Kenyon Sadiq, also out of Oregon, will likely be gone before the Niners pick in the first round. They could set their sights on Stanford product Sam Roush who is known for being a solid run blocker.

San Francisco did retain Jake Tonges who filled in nicely for Kittle last season, so tight end is not a glaring are of need, but some depth there would be nice.

Lynch and Co. still have time to fill these holes, but the 49ers would be wise to fill them eventually so they don't feel undermanned going into next season.
