It feels safe to say San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has yet to live up to his lofty draft status. There are several factors at play, including the fact he got shot just a handful of months after the club selected him.

However, the Niners need Pearsall now more than ever.

Franchise tight end George Kittle, who tore his Achilles in January, hopes to be ready for Week 1 of the upcoming season. The logistical challenges of facing the Los Angeles Rams in Australia to kick off their schedule complicate matters, though.

Even if Kittle does manage to suit up, he turns age 33 in October and is coming off a major injury. San Francisco ought to ease him into action, at least early on. That puts the onus on Pearsall, among others, to step up on offense.

The stars are aligning for Pearsall to get his moment to shine in 2026, as FanSided's Wynston Wilcox perfectly illustrated.

Wilcox highlighted Pearsall as one of the many "up-and-coming stars" in the NFL who "will be household name[s] soon:"

"Ricky Pearsall will finally have his chance to join San Francisco lore as the next top receiver," Wilcox wrote. "They drafted him to be the future star of this offense, and now that the old guard is out, he'll have a chance to take over the receiver room as the next successful wideout in the Bay Area."

Stage is set for 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall's long-awaited breakout

There was buzz surrounding Pearsall last year, but a hamstring issue during the Niners' workout program stopped the hype — and most notably stymied him. From that point on, his reps were managed throughout the summer, which he impressively overcame early on.

Pearsall was productive when available in 2025. He was tied for 12th in yards per reception (14.7) out of 80 wideouts who drew at least 50 targets, including the playoffs. Moreover, his 1.68 yards per route run ranked 34th using the same statistical filter.

Nevertheless, a nagging PCL sprain derailed Pearsall's momentum in his sophomore pro campaign, limiting him to 36 receptions for 528 scoreless yards across nine games. He posted a donut on two targets in the Niners' embarrassing 41-6 Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

At long last, Pearsall has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy offseason. He can focus on developing his already strong rapport with standout quarterback Brock Purdy instead of rehabbing.

Combine that welcome development with Kittle's uncertain status, and the 2024 first-round pick is poised to break out.
