Real reason why Brock Purdy shouted at Kyle Shanahan may disappoint some 49ers fans

In the San Francisco 49ers' Week 6 victory over the Washington Commanders, Brock Purdy was seen yelling at Kyle Shanahan over on the sidelines when the head coach was calling a play.

The act wasn't viewed negatively. Quite the opposite, in fact. Given the stellar year Purdy is currently putting together, many viewed it as Purdy finally taking the reins of the offense from his play caller. After years of being called a product of Shanahan's system, fans assumed Purdy yelled at the coach for taking too long to call a play, so the quarterback proceeded to take matters into his own hands.

The assumption is exciting, but unfortunately it's not true. Shanahan burst the bubbles of Brock Purdy truthers by explaining the real story - a far less juicy one.

"It's actually not, 'Call the play faster.' It's 'I need it again,' and then it gets cut off at 15 [seconds]... A lot of the quarterbacks do it... I don't remember what the play call was. It probably happened like five times in the game," the play caller said.

Kyle Shanahan's admission takes away an argument for Purdy's MVP case

The truth can be deflating sometimes, as it was when Kyle broke the unfortunate news that Purdy indeed did not go rogue, especially given Purdy's MVP-favorite status.

This season, he has become the measuring stick to which fans and pundits compare opposing quarterbacks. He has outgrown the title of "system quarterback," as he looks less like a cog in Kyle Shanahan's offensive wheel and more like the engine that powers the entire vehicle.

But it comes to the dismay of future Purdy MVP campaigners who might have been under the impression that Purdy was controlling the offense. Obviously, that power still resides with Shanahan.

49ers fans can't let one small false assumption deter Purdy's MVP train

Even though he may not possess the off-script spontaneity of Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes, Purdy is still the MVP favorite for good reason.

His season thus far has been nothing short of historic, as he currently holds the NFL's highest career passer rating. Granted, his career is far from over, and anything can happen, but he has been more consistent and more efficient than anyone in the league this year, and it's not particularly close.

If Purdy continues his run, he won't need mythical stories or wives' tales to support his MVP case. At the moment, he is doing fine with his play alone. With other candidates seemingly dropping like flies, Purdy's chances of winning the award are only getting stronger.
