There were not many losers for the 49ers on Monday night against the visiting Jets.

Winner No. 3: Nick Sorensen and the 49ers defense

One person who probably felt a lot of pressure going into Monday night's game was first-year defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen.

He came in to replace Steve Wilks, who was fired last year, and entered with high expectations that he could improve a defense that was already quite good in 2023.

The defense passed the test in Week 1 as they did not allow Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers to go off, keeping him to just 167 passing yards, and the Niners were able to contain running back Breece Hall to just 54 yards on the ground.

There were concerns about San Francisco's run defense entering 2024, since it was an issue last year, but the Niners were able to play very solid in that area in this game.

Of course, the defense looked pretty good starting off last season as well, so there is still plenty of time for the tide to turn.

But for now, it looks like the defense is playing as a cohesive unit, and it looks like defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Nick Bosa will make a very good team on the defensive line.

Now, let's turn to the one "loser" from the night for San Francisco, which feels a bit harsh but nonetheless is still sort of true.
