It'll be the 49ers and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl again after the two squads met four years ago.

If the San Francisco 49ers managed to find a way to make it beyond the NFC Championship game over the Detroit Lions, the Niners would be assured a chance to enact some vengeance against one of the two teams that owns a victory over them in the Super Bowl.

The Baltimore Ravens, who beat San Francisco way back after the 2012 season in Super Bowl XLVII, ultimately lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.

And, as 49ers fans may recall, it was quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs who defeated their team in Super Bowl 54 four years ago.

Despite a 17-point deficit at halftime to Detroit, the Niners managed to enact a comeback victory in the NFC Championship game that propelled them to Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As well as a rematch against KC.

49ers will play Chiefs in Super Bowl 58

San Francisco nearly pulled off a Super Bowl win over Kansas City four years ago, as head coach Kyle Shanahan and Co. had a 20-10 lead over the Chiefs before Mahomes turned things around en route to a 31-10 victory.

Mahomes is still there, as is All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and head coach Andy Reid. A few other names, too.

For the 49ers, it'll be quarterback Brock Purdy under center in only his second NFL season after being drafted with the absolute final pick in 2022.

When the two teams met in the Super Bowl after the 2019 season, it was Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback for the Niners.

49ers' Super Bowl history vs. Chiefs' Super Bowl history

Super Bowl 58 will mark the second time that San Francisco and Kansas City have faced each other in the NFL championship showdown.

The 49ers have been to seven Super Bowls, previously, winning five of them between the 1981 and 1994 seasons but losing their last two. The Chiefs, meanwhile, have won three Super Bowls, including two of the last four.

KC's first Super Bowl win was back on Jan. 11, 1970 over the Minnesota Vikings, while its most recent Super Bowl victory was a season ago on Feb. 12, 2023, over the Philadelphia Eagles.

49ers vs. Chiefs all-time series

Kansas City holds the edge over the Niners in the all-time series, eight games to seven, including Super Bowl 54.

The first time San Francisco met KC was way back in 1971, a game Kansas City won by a score of 26-17.

The Chiefs' most recent win over the 49ers was a 44-23 walloping at Levi's Stadium on Oct. 23, 2022, while the Niners' most recent victory over KC was way back in 2014, long before Mahomes and Purdy were even sniffing the picture.

Kansas City has also won five of its last six contests, including Super Bowl 54, over San Francisco.

Now, the 49ers hope to turn that tide when the two teams meet on Sunday, Feb. 11 for Super Bowl 58.
