3 trades 49ers will regret not making at 2023 NFL trade deadline

Perhaps the 49ers should have traded just a wee bit more prior to the NFL trade deadline.

49ers missed trade No. 3: S Kevin Byard (Titans)

NFL trade deadline result: Traded to Eagles

The 49ers don't exactly need a safety, thanks to the tandem of Tashaun Gipson and Talanoa Hufanga. But they could have been mindful of another top competitor for the Super Bowl within the conference.

The Philadelphia Eagles were also viewed as winners at the trade deadline, and their pickup of All-Pro safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans sure won't make Niners fans feel better about the chances of a reversal from what happened in the NFC Championship game last January.

Philly gave up a decent package to land Byard, sending off defensive back Terrell Edmunds as the marquee piece that also included two late-round draft picks in 2024.

San Francisco likely needed to entertain such a move, if for no other reason than to block Philadelphia from upgrading its already good defensive backfield. And upgrading over the aging Gipson wouldn't have been

Hopefully, that move to the Eagles won't haunt the 49ers in some way or another.
