Super Bowl 58: Which players have played for both 49ers and Chiefs?
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers and Chiefs have swapped plenty of players over the years, including one Joe Montana, but which current players have played for both teams?
Without blinking an eye, the most famous player who has worn the red uniforms of both the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs is Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana.
Montana will have his loyalties (seriously, they need to be with the Niners) tested on Feb. 11 when San Francisco takes on KC in Super Bowl 58, which is a rematch of Super Bowl 54 four years ago, a game Kansas City ultimately won 31-20.
Plenty of players on both teams' rosters were around for that particular Super Bowl.
A few have even switched sides.
With Super Bowl 58 just a week away, let's take a quick look at which current players getting ready for the big game have called both San Francisco and Kansas City home.
These players in Super Bowl 58 have played for both 49ers and Chiefs
Right now, perhaps the biggest name between the two teams is 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward, who started his career with KC before signing a free-agent deal with the Niners in 2022.
Ward helped Kansas City beat San Francisco in February of 2020 and now hopes to flip the script.
On the flip side, defensive end Charles Omenihu was with the 49ers in 2021 and 2022 before jumping ship to join the Chiefs in free agency in 2023, while running back Jerick McKinnon was with the Niners from 2018 through 2020 before joining KC in 2021.
Lis of current Super Bowl players who played for both 49ers and Chiefs
- CB Charvarius Ward (Chiefs: 2018-2021, 49ers: 2022-2023)
- DE Charles Omenihu (49ers: 2021-2022, Chiefs: 2023)
- RB Jerick McKinnon (49ers: 2018-2020, Chiefs: 2021-2023)
- WR Richie James (49ers: 2018-2020, Chiefs: 2023)
- QB Blaine Gabbert (49ers: 2014-2016, Chiefs: 2023)
- WR Chris Conley (Chiefs: 2015-2018, 49ers: 2023)
- TE Blake Bell (49ers: 2015-2016, Chiefs: 2019-2023)
Yes, James is on Kansas City's roster after being San Francisco's primary return specialist the last time these two teams met in the Super Bowl.
And, yes, Bell "the Belldozer" is still very much in the NFL despite being part of those forgettable 49ers squads of 2015 and 2016.
Glaine Babbert, too (hope you remember that name).
The Niners and Chiefs square off for Super Bowl 58 on Sunday, Feb. 11 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
