6. Alex Smith (2005 to 2012)

In the 2005 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected quarterback Alex Smith with the No. 1 overall pick. And the first few seasons with him, let's say he did not live up to the hype very well.

The first few seasons of Smith were marked by inconsistency, injury and multiple coaching changes. Finally, in 2011, Smith found some consistency with new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The team would go 13-3 and make it to the NFC Championship game.

That playoff run would, however, be Smith's first and last with the 49ers, as the following season, he would be replaced by Colin Kaepernick after suffering a midseason concussion.

Smith finished his career with the team with a 38-36-1 regular-season record as a starter, and a 1-1 playoff record.
