Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo probably won't play vs. 49ers on Sunday

The 49ers saw plenty of Jimmy Garoppolo during joint practices the week before a preseason game against the Raiders in which he probably won't play.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan already told reporters that he isn't planning on dressing his starters for Sunday's preseason contest against the Las Vegas Raiders.
After two days of joint practices between the two teams, Shanahan has probably seen enough.
"Usually, when we go scrimmage against guys, I rarely play our starters," Shanahan said prior to the week's practices with the Raiders. "That’s usually my plan going into it, because I’m a little more into the practices than the games."
That means Niners quarterback Brock Purdy likely won't even suit up, which will give both Trey Lance and Sam Darnold ample time to compete for the No. 2 quarterbacking job behind Purdy.
On the flip side, though, San Francisco probably isn't going to see an old friend take the field against the red and gold either.
Jimmy Garoppolo not likely to play for Raiders vs. 49ers on Sunday
Both the 49ers and Raiders open up their preseason campaigns against each other on Sunday, Aug. 13, from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Of course, one of the big talking points during the offseason was how the Niners' longtime quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, finally departed via free agency to join Vegas on a three-year deal.
Garoppolo and the Raiders had some successes against San Francisco's defense during practices, but it doesn't appear as if he'll get the chance to do so again in front of a live crowd and via a televised broadcast.
After the practices, Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels admitted any decision about his starters wasn't made yet.

"We have not made any final determination really on anybody," McDaniels told reports, via Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We’re going to talk about that tonight.”
No concrete news has surfaced since about whether or not Garoppolo will square off against his old team within an exhibition context. However, considering McDaniels didn't bother playing his former quarterback, Derek Carr, in any of last year's preseason games, it seems unlikely Jimmy G will be trotted out there this Sunday.
Especially with Garoppolo's injury history, which 49ers fans know well.
The Niners and Raiders kick off their preseason Week 1 contest on Sunday, Aug. 13 at 4 p.m. ET.
