3 problems 49ers need to fix before Week 3 game vs. rival Rams
By Scott Conrad
1. 49ers' passing offense must score more
It took Brock Purdy almost six quarters of play to find a receiver in the end zone. He has just one touchdown pass on the year.
To have a solid chance at victory, San Francisco's starting hurler has to step up. He is another name in the locker room that is eventually looking for big pay like wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams have been locked in for.
A season ago, Purdy had the third most touchdowns from the quarterback position behind only the Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott and the Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love. As the 49ers miss the dual-threat production from running back Christian McCaffrey, Purdy must connect with other targets more efficiently to put points on the scoreboard.
Kicker Jake Moody has done what he can to add points. In Week 1, he alone outscored the Jets 20-19. Meanwhile, running back Jordan Mason has rushed for at least 100 yards and a score in both games.
While the defense is allowing nearly four more points a game this year than last, the offensive scoring has dropped that same margin this year.
It begins with Purdy who has taken his team to consecutive NFC Championship games.
Deebo Samuel and rookie Ricky Pearsall are not in the lineup. Kyle Shanahan needs to have plays ready to focus the yardage and attention on routes for Aiyuk, fellow wide receiver Jauan Jennings, tight end George Kittle and even Mason.
It is a total team effort to win football games, but it begins under center with Purdy.
