Predicting 49ers' running back depth chart (there's 1 star and a lot of questions)

Behind Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers have a number of question marks at running back that'll have to be answered this season.

2. Elijah Mitchell

Elijah MItchell, the three-year veteran, was a nice complement to McCaffrey on the field, and the former had 75 carries for 281 yards in 2023 to go with his two scores.

The former sixth-round pick played in 11 games again, just like his rookie season in 2021. He missed significant time, previously, only appearing in five contests in 2022.

Arguably, Mitchell's best game in 2023 came on the road against the Washington Commanders. He collected 80 yards rushing on 17 carries and rushing touchdown.

Mitchell has amassed nine rushing touchdowns and been responsible for 84 first downs in his career.

However, one possibility the 49ers should explore is trading Mitchell for a late-round draft pick, which will probably be difficult because of his extensive injury history.

Otherwise, the Niners may just have to gamble on his health and availability to support McCaffrey.
