Predicting 49ers' 53-man roster after 1st week of preseason games

The 49ers' brass will face plenty of decisions leading up to final roster cuts. The first preseason game might have provided some insight into how those moves might shake out.

49ers' Running Backs

HB Christian McCaffrey

HB Jordan Mason

HB Elijah Mitchell

HB Isaac Guerendo

FB Kyle Juszczyk

Same group as before training camp, with the slight alteration near the top.

Obviously, nobody is bumping Christian McCaffrey from his do-it-all role, but training camp and Saturday's preseason game have indicated that Jordan Mason is likely to take over as the No. 2 back for Kyle Shanahan's offense.

This isn't to say that Elijah Mitchell can't do the job. He just can't stay healthy, and so the 49ers will look to keep him around, but mostly as insurance and depth.

Rookie Isaac Guerendo hasn't featured during camp, but the 49ers clearly like him and, if he can get healthy, he can be an interesting counterpunch for the offense as well as a viable option to return kicks.

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk is a no-brainer here as he's the best at his position in the league.

One thing that wouldn't be shocking is if UDFA rookie Cody Schrader makes things interesting near the bottom of the depth chart.

With McCaffrey not playing in the preseason games and Jordan Mason starting to lock himself in as RB2, it'll be worth watching to see if Shanahan offers the former All-American out of Missouri more than the five carries he had on Saturday and whether Schrader can take advantage of those reps.
