Power ranking each 49ers position group entering Week 1 of 2023 season
The 49ers have one of the best rosters in the NFL, but how does each position stack up against each other? Niner Noise power ranks the position groups to see the strong points of the roster.
The San Francisco 49ers have a top-five roster in the NFL by consensus of most pundits covering the league entering 2023. With stars littered across the team -- from Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey to Fred Warner and Nick Bosa -- the Niners might boast the most top-three players in their respective NFL positions.
This loading-up of stars has, predictably, come at the expense of some depth as the bloated salaries of the team's superstars leave the back of the roster filled by rookies and veterans on minimum contracts.
It begs the question: What 49ers position group is est overall?
This is not just about the one star who headlines the position but the entire group as a whole, from the starter to the fourth-string scout team player. For a 49ers team that has struggled with injuries throughout Kyle Shanahan's tenure as head coach, the quality of depth is crucially important to surviving a full season.
Let's power rank the positions: QB (quarterback), RB (running back), WR (wide receiver), TE (tight end), OL (offensive line), DL (defensive line), LB (linebackers), DB (defensive backs) and ST (special teams).
For this, we'll be looking at all players on the 53-man roster and select players on the practice squad who'll likely be called up at times to play. As mentioned earlier, this is a position group power ranking and every player matters. That said, an increased weight will be placed on those who will assuredly receive more playing time, like how 49ers linebackers rarely rotate but the defensive line does.
Let's get started.
