4 potential surprise cuts 49ers may make after training camp

It's never an easy job finding 53 players from a 90-man offseason roster, but the 49ers (and all other 31 teams) have to do it prior to Week 1.

49ers cut candidate No. 3: Wide receiver Danny Gray

So much of what could happen with second-year wide receiver Danny Gray hinges upon what happens with the Niners' quarterback situation.

San Francisco drafted Gray in Round 3 a year ago because of his speed, which was supposed to be used in tandem with the strong arm of quarterback Trey Lance, who was the presumed starter in 2022.

Except Lance suffered a broken ankle in Week 2, which led to lesser-armed quarterbacks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy, not being able to utilize Gray's speed.

Combined with a relatively inability to block or run other routes, Gray was limited to just one catch for 10 yards his rookie season.

Purdy appears to be the lock to start in 2023, meaning Gray had better hone the rest of his skills rather than just go routes.

If he doesn't, and amid a crowded wide receiver depth chart entering camp, the former SMU wideout could be on the outs after just one season.
