4 potential surprise cuts 49ers may make after training camp

It's never an easy job finding 53 players from a 90-man offseason roster, but the 49ers (and all other 31 teams) have to do it prior to Week 1.

49ers cut candidate No. 2: Safety George Odum

That $1.37 million in dead money would likely keep Tashaun Gipson on the roster, assuming he'd be willing to accept a backup role to Ji'Ayir Brown.

But fellow safety George Odum has nothing left, in terms of guaranteed cash, on his contract that runs through 2025. Now that the calendar has turned past June 1, a roster cut would cost the Niners $400,000 this year and again the next while generating $1.94 million in cap savings for 2023 alone.

San Francisco inked Odum for his special teams abilities, not necessarily to be a defensive contributor.

If the 49ers want to save a little cash, parting ways with Odum would make sense.
