49ers trade target No. 4: RB Dalvin Cook, Jets

The Niners already have a legitimate MVP candidate in Christian McCaffrey. But, as recent weeks have shown, Kyle Shanahan is at serious risk of overusing him.

Backup running backs like Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason have done little to suggest they're adequate No. 2 options, yet the need to spell McCaffrey and keep him fresh remains.

So, why not target a McCaffrey-like running back who's likely on the trade block?

The New York Jets probably wish they never signed veteran rusher Dalvin Cook to a one-year, $7 million deal. Scantly used, Cook seems far removed from the perennial Pro Bowler he was during his heyday years with the Vikings.

As a complement to McCaffrey in a dynamic offense, however, Cook could thrive. Even if he was just in a support role and nothing else.
