Mark Sanchez rubbed salt in the wound with a foolish comparison in 49ers loss

The washed-up QB made a very silly comparison during the 49ers' Week 3 loss.

The San Francisco 49ers lost a heartbreaker to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. The game hurt for many reasons, but Fox Sports announcer Mark Sanchez decided to rub salt in the wound with a very poor comparison late in the game.

As the Niners were in the process of coughing up the game late, as they are wont to do, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a deep pass down the field to wide receiver Tutu Atwell. Atwell had cornerback Charvarius Ward beat on the play and he made a semi-over-the-shoulder catch.

It was a decent catch that set up a touchdown score for the Rams to tie the game, which is bad enough, but then Sanchez decided to run his fat yap just to rub some salt into the wound.

He decided to compare Atwell's catch to the famous Willie Mays over-the-shoulder catch that he made in the 1954 World Series as the center fielder of the New York Giants before they moved out west to San Francisco. Mays went on to become an San Francisco Giants legend.

With all due respect to 49ers legend Dwight Clark, Mays' catch is probably the greatest catch ever recorded on video. He had to run so far to catch that ball on a dead sprint and literally had to catch it over the shoulder while sprinting before turning around and firing a missile back into the infield.

Sanchez deciding to compare Atwell's catch, one in which he was able to stop and adjust and contort his body to the side because he beat Ward so badly, is the peak of sports broadcaster hypocrisy. Sanchez did walk it back a bit upon seeing the replay but still essentially said there were shades of Mays with the catch.

No, there weren't, Mark.

As a Long Beach native who attended USC, he likely could not help but try and get a dig in at Bay Area sports fans just a few months after Mays passed away at the age of 93.

Let's also keep in mind the irony that Mark "Butt Fumble" Sanchez decided to make this erroneous comparison. He was at the center of probably the worst sports play ever recorded on video and yet he decided to make a completely inaccurate comparison to arguably the greatest catch ever recorded by video.

If the loss wasn't bad enough, Sanchez proving himself to be wholly uninformed made the loss hurt even more. Let's hope he and his bad takes stay far, far away from the 49ers as he follows up his embarrassment of an NFL career as a C-rate analyst.
