Madden NFL 24 ratings show little love for 49ers quarterbacks
By Peter Panacy
The 49ers' three quarterbacks -- Brock Purdy, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold -- aren't rated very high by Madden NFL 2024.
Yes, another article about the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation.
And, yes. More complaints and critiques about EA Sports' Madden NFL series.
OK, it's a video game. And you know you're in the middle of the offseason when you're talking about video games, particularly their player ratings when none of them truly matter in the grand scheme of things.
Seriously, though, why did defensive tackle Javon Hargrave rated an 84? And All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams, perhaps the pound-for-pound best player in the NFL, isn't part of the 99 club?
Why, EA Sports? We have questions.

Refocusing on the whole quarterback thing, fans and analysts probably know and understand that it's the biggest question mark for the Niners entering 2023. Brock Purdy, coming back from offseason elbow surgery, looking to hold off two former No. 3 overall draft picks, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold, who wouldn't mind San Francisco's starting gig.
None of those signal-callers are close to being called elite, and Madden knows that.
Each of the players' ratings in Madden 24 reflect that, too.
Madden NFL 24 rates all 3 of the 49ers quarterbacks in the low 70s, a point separates Brock Purdy and Trey Lance
A hat tip to Kyle Posey of Niners Nation for the find, as EA Sports has been rolling out player ratings over the last few days.
The three starting-caliber quarterbacks the 49ers have all received ratings as follows:
- Brock Purdy: 72
- Trey Lance: 71
- Sam Darnold: 71
Additionally, fourth-string quarterback Brandon Allen received a 54 mark (if you were interested).
As Posey pointed out, and something I share from the age-old days of me playing Madden, quarterbacks in the 70s were widely viewed as backups, not starters. Purdy, despite being the final pick of the 2022 draft and starting off the year as the third-string option, showed plenty over the Niners' regular-season stretch and push into the playoffs, so it's safe to argue that EA Sports probably missed the mark with a 72-grade by a little bit.
Interestingly enough, though, only one point separates Purdy from Lance (and Darnold, too, for that matter).
When in doubt, though, all we need to do is remind ourselves that it's a video game and nothing more.
Certainly nothing worth writing up and complaining about, right?
