Kyle Shanahan says everything and nothing about Brandon Aiyuk trade rumors
By Peter Panacy
Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters amid the Brandon Aiyuk trade saga, and it's hard to read between the lines.
"Nothing's changed right now."
Those were some of the words said by San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan when asked about the ongoing drama surrounding star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, his stalemate contract extension and whirlwind trade rumors, many of which blew up on Monday.
At one point, it appeared as if a trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers was imminent, agreed upon in principle and just awaiting the official notification.
But, that was soon off the table, while the Cleveland Browns and New England Patriots emerged as front-runners before multiple outlets, including NFL Network and ESPN, reported the Steelers were again back in the mix.
It's been a wild 24 hours.
Not surprisingly, Aiyuk was a hot topic during Shanahan's Tuesday presser that followed training camp practices, at which the team's leading receiver from the last two seasons was present, albeit not practicing.
For those hoping to gain some insight into where the Niners are at with Aiyuk and a possible trade or new contract, Shanahan didn't offer much by the way of news.
Kyle Shanahan sidesteps Brandon Aiyuk trade and extension questions
Shanahan has a history of not getting too involved in contract talks, although that has never prevented him from fielding tough questions.
Many of those popped up on Tuesday.
"Every day, I hope it gets resolved," Shanahan said. "But I have no timetable on it. It didn't surprise me coming into this. ... Hopefully, it'll get resolved sooner or later."
Shanahan did admit there's still room for a possible extension, although that wasn't totally guaranteed when he said "there's a scenario for everything."
So, by that account, a trade, an extension or Aiyuk sticking around on the final year of his current contract are all still very much in play, which fans have been accustomed to hearing almost all offseason.
However, trades have been the primary focus surrounding the receiver's immediate future, and Shanahan did acknowledge Aiyuk received permission to seek out trades, although San Francisco's own demands would have to be met if the wideout was to be moved.
So far, no news on that front.
"I'm not going to get into specifics with offers, contracts, trades or anything like that," Shanahan added. "But what I can tell you is that nothing has changed. A lot was out yesterday, but from the situation we're in with Brandon, nothing's changed."
If it's possible to read between the lines, pairing it with the back-and-forth reports, it seems as if the 49ers intend to force Aiyuk's hand as much as possible, although there are plenty of boxes that would need to be checked in order for a trade to go through.
And Shanahan isn't budging on the details.
