Kyle Shanahan embraces 49ers' 3 quarterback dilemma, says it's 'cool'
By Peter Panacy
While many pundits and fans are worried about the 49ers' uncertainties at quarterback, Kyle Shanahan is embracing it.
The San Francisco 49ers just can't seem to quit quarterback controversies. A year ago at this time, all the speculation and rumor centered around whether or not the Niners would move quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, and he even was working out separately away from the rest of the team during the opening days of training camp.
Except Garoppolo stayed, which proved to be a bonus when the presumed starter, Trey Lance, suffered a season-ending ankle break in Week 2.
Garoppolo is finally gone now, though, off to the Las Vegas Raiders in NFL free agency. While Lance is back healthy, he's now looking up on the depth chart at quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Brock Purdy.
At least that's the presumption that Lance will be No. 3 behind those two.
In what's otherwise been a quiet offseason for San Francisco, this new quarterback conversation has been the lone major headline, and it's likely to be the No. 1 topic when training camp kicks off next week.
However, if you were to ask head coach Kyle Shanahan, he doesn't see it as a concern whatsoever. He's actually excited about it.

Purdy is still out after undergoing offseason surgery on his throwing elbow, but Lance and Darnold have already split first-team reps during organized team activities.
Shanahan already said those workouts don't mean much, in terms of the depth chart, and training camp is "truly where I see the competition starting."
Well, the competition is starting soon.
Not surprisingly, this topic came up when Shanahan met with NFL Network's Steve Wyche, and the head coach had a pretty provocative response when asked about it:
"We have three guys that can play, there's only one spot, and we have a good team. I see it as a cool situation.
I get how everyone wants something set in stone, but it's not set in stone. I love the options. I love the experience that Brock got. Trey got some too. I love the ability that we have in the room. Besides those three, I love our room around them. Let's let it play out, and all I have to do is survive the press conferences."

Definitely, Shanahan is going to field those questions a lot during training camp. Even if Purdy isn't back on the field yet, he'll be talked about. Lance's future will be discussed, and it's probable that even Darnold were earn a few talking points, too.
Whatever the cases may be, Shanahan seems to be "cool" with them.
