John Lynch says everything and nothing about 49ers' defensive coordinator search

After a lengthy period of secrecy regarding San Francisco's search for a new defensive coordinator after parting ways with Steve Wilks immediately after the Super Bowl, news from both Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch has started to come to the surface.

Shanahan told NBC Sports Bay Area that he was hoping to have interviews wrapped up this week, interviews that included former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, as well as two internal and two external candidates.

At the combine, Lynch reinforced the timeline for the eventual announcement.

However, Lynch didn't go into much detail about which options the 49ers were honing in on. He did, though, stress the desire to maintain the same kind of philosophy:

"We like who we are and what we do as a defense," Lynch said. "I know we don't want a wholesale departure from that."

That could point to more of an internal hire, given the Niners don't want to stray too far from their current defensive scheme and could risk doing so with an external hire.

Or it could merely be wordage from Lynch, which is oh-so common this time of year.
