Will Jimmy Garoppolo take the field for the Rams against his old 49ers team?

The 49ers take on the Rams in Week 3, which means Jimmy Garoppolo could feasibly square off against his old squad.
Week 3's contest between the San Francisco 49ers and the winless Los Angeles Rams has plenty of storylines to monitor.
Aside from an NFC West rivalry game, and the frequently discussed connection between head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay, along with plenty of other players who have gone back and forth, the Niners will see an old fan favorite in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Garoppolo, of course, signed a one-year deal with LA during the offseason after a failed one-year stint with the Las Vegas Raiders, which followed his unceremonious departure from San Francisco in 2023. That year, the 49ers ultimately opted to go with Brock Purdy under center instead of Jimmy G, and it's safe to say the latter's career has turned south ever since.
But Garoppolo's new gig isn't as Los Angeles' starter. He was pegged to be veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford's backup, and the former even had to serve a two-game suspension to begin the year because of an offseason PED violation.
Garoppolo is back now, though. And with all of the Rams' injury problems, will Jimmy G end up taking the field against his former team?
Will Jimmy Garoppolo play for Rams vs. 49ers in Week 3?
LA has a slew of injuries, including a banged-up offensive line and both wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua sitting this one out.
That puts an immense amount of pressure on Stafford, who'll assuredly get the start.
But Garoppolo is likely going to be the go-to guy over fellow backup Stetson Bennett, who seems to be falling out of favor with McVay and lacks the head coach's confidence to take over in case of a blowout or a Stafford injury.
Either or both of those scenarios are about the only way Garoppolo would see the field on Sunday, although him suiting up for the game is all but guaranteed.
The Niners and Rams kick off on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 4:25 p.m. ET from SoFI Stadium.
