Jay Glazer reveals how close 49ers came to trading Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers agreed on an extension that will keep him in the Bay area through 2028. The deal was a long time coming as Aiyuk was searching for an extension and he got paid, inking a four-year extension worth $120 million.
Before agreeing on the deal, there were rumors that Aiyuk was going to be shipped off to Pittsburgh but that never came to fruition. Jay Glazer reported on Sunday morning, however, that the Niners were planning to trade Aiyuk to Pittsburgh on the day he signed his extension.
According to Glazer, Aiyuk had a choice in the matter. Sign the deal they offered or go to Pittsburgh. Aiyuk chose to take the deal and remain with the 49ers.
Brandon Aiyuk was very close to being traded to Steelers
49ers fans were thrilled that the team was able to keep Aiyuk and it sounds like that almost didn't happen. He'd have been a great addition to the Steelers offense but the Niners offense is better with him being a part of it.
Last year, Aiyuk finished with 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns and was huge in helping getting the team to the Super Bowl. While the 49ers have other weapons for Brock Purdy, there's no doubt that Aiyuk is one of their best options.
It's not shocking that Aiyuk chose to stay in San Francisco rather than agree to be traded. While the Steelers are a winning franchise, they're not a Super Bowl contender. They have a better quarterback situation this year with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson both on the roster in Pittsburgh but if Aiyuk wants to win a ring, his best option here was to take the (very nice) deal the 49ers had offered him.
This is still a crazy report though but 49ers fans are glad that Brandon Aiyuk chose to remain with the team that drafted him.
