Jason Verrett (almost) returning to 49ers after yearlong absence

Signing Jason Verrett certainly can't hurt the 49ers' depth options

The 49ers have been working out veteran cornerback Jason Verrett recently, and he appears poised to sign with the practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers are close to bringing back an old friend, veteran cornerback Jason Verrett.

Verrett, who originally signed with the Niners for the first time back in 2019, has dealt with plenty of career-altering injuries over what could have been a storybook career, including a torn ACL at the beginning of his 2021 campaign and then a torn Achilles during training camp entering the 2022 season.

Fully recovered from those two devastating injuries, San Francisco has been working out the 32-year-old veteran with the idea of potentially adding him to the practice squad.

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan's press conference on Friday (h/t 49ers Webzone), the plan is for Verrett to sign with the practice squad after the weekend.

49ers plan on signing Jason Verrett to practice squad

"Yeah, we tried him out," Shanahan said of Verrett. "We don't have him signed yet. We'll work through that over this weekend and see how it ends up for next week."

The head coach also added "nothing official yet."

The Niners were reportedly hot on the trail for a cornerback at the NFL trade deadline but ended up not making a deal for that position. So, finding a low-risk player like Verrett who could help bolster the depth while spending time on the practice squad would make a lot of sense.

Especially for the second half of the season to help guard against injuries to the remainder of San Francisco's starting options.

Verrett has 36 career starts, 14 of which are with the 49ers. His best season with the red and gold was in 2020 when he started 13 games, recording two interceptions and seven pass breakups.
