5 free agents who may follow Brandon Staley to 49ers

No. 1: Cornerback Michael Davis
It'll be hard for San Francisco to splurge in free agency, as the team is already pressed up against the salary cap.
But, if the 49ers figure out ways to generate some sizable cap space and want to target a potential impact defender, veteran cornerback Michael Davis could be the No. 1 target. And his association with Brandon Staley is also a prominent factor, too.
Davis, 29 years old, joined the Bolts as an undrafted free agent in 2017 and became a starter in year two, a role he held all the way through last season despite dealing with periodic injuries. During that span, the 6-foot-2 and 196-pound defender had 349 tackles, eight interceptions and 69 passes broken up. And while 2023 was a bit of a down year for him, in 2022, Davis held opposing quarterbacks to a 66.2 passer rating when targeting him, a career-best.
The Niners need another cornerback this offseason to pair with their No. 1 option, Charvarius Ward, on the boundary.
Perhaps Davis is lured by Staley to San Francisco to help address this pressing need.
