Turning back to the defense, the 49ers could use some help with their linebacker corps. Warner is making a strong early case to be the Defensive Player of the Year, but his two position mates, De'Vondre Campbell and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, have not been playing anywhere near Warner's level.

The Niners could have an internal option in Dee Winters, but he has dealt with some injury struggles so far.

If the 49ers want to add some veteran depth they could opt for Stanford product Blake Martinez. He had several solid seasons with the Green Bay Packers to start his career but has barely played at all the last few years.

He had a very weird couple of years where he retired briefly to sell Pokemon cards but was then accused of scamming people. I remember the good old days when a Stanford education meant you could sell Pokemon cards on the up and up. Shameful.

But if he has put his scamming ways behind him and still has something left in the tank, Martinez could be a low-risk, high-reward option as the Niners wait for the return of Dre Greenlaw.

We shall see if the 49ers decide to pursue any of these options to add some depth to their injury-riddled team.
