16 former 49ers who remain without a team in NFL free agency
Former 49ers who are free agents: QB Matt Barkley
Many may not remember former 49ers quarterback Matt Barkley because he never played in a regular-season game for the team. He competed for a roster spot in 2017 but only played in the preseason.
He played last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars as backup to Trevor Lawrence and CJ Beathard. He did not throw single pass in one game played.
Perhaps he will find another team, but not the 49ers since they are set at quarterback.
Former 49ers who are free agents: QB Nate Sudfeld
Nate Sudfeld made sense on paper for a reunion with the 49ers. Brock Purdy beat him out for a job in 2022 so he was familiar with the system. But the signings of Josh Dobbs and Brandon Allen mean that dream is over.
He has bounced around from team to team in his career, so he will likely find a home next season, perhaps as the emergency third-string QB on some team.
