Former 49ers available in free agency: Matt Barkley

If you remember that Matt Barkley was on the 49ers at one point, you'd probably do well at Niners trivia night.

Barkley was brought in in 2017, the first year under Kyle Shanahan, to compete for a spot on the team.

He was cut after the preseason in favor of Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard. Since then, he has bounced around from team to team as backup quarterbacks often do. Most recently, he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023 where he had a chance to reunite with Beathard in the QB room.

Barkley's career NFL statistics are not great. He has 11 touchdown passes compared to 22 interceptions and 2,699 passing yards. Not pretty stuff.

Perhaps the 49ers could bring Barkley in to compete for a backup spot, but they may be better served looking elsewhere.
