Many fans weren't even alive the last time 49ers beat Vikings in Minnesota

You won't believe the last time the Niners went on the road and actually beat the Vikings in Minnesota.

There's an entire generation of 49ers fans who've never seen their team beat the Vikings in Minnesota.

If the San Francisco 49ers take to the road and beat the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad will accomplish something that hasn't been done in a very, very long time.

In fact, there's an entire generation of (younger) Niners fans who've never witnessed San Francisco pull off a road victory against the Norsemen. Sure, the 49ers have had plenty of success against Minnesota in recent years, having won three of the last five head-to-head showdowns, including a divisional playoff victory at Levi's Stadium back in January of 2020.

Overall, the Niners are 25-24-1 in the all-time regular-season series.

As for beating the Vikings at their own home venue, though, San Francisco hasn't exactly had much luck.

49ers last beat the Vikings in Minnesota in 1992

To find the last time the 49ers beat the Vikings in Minnesota, either at the current venue at US Bank Stadium or at the long-defunct Metrodome, one has to travel back all the way to the Niners' glory years.

1992, to be precise.

Yeah, an entire generation of San Francisco fans has come of age and then some since the last time the 49ers won in Minneapolis, a whopping 32 years.

To put things into context, that 20-17 Niners victory on Dec. 13 of that year happened at a time when running back Ricky Watters was a rookie and Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana was still on the roster.

San Francisco has come close since then, of course, including having a shot at a victory with Brock Purdy under center in 2023 but ultimately coming up short.

And then there was that Brett Favre game in 2009, but we won't go there.

Ultimately, since that 1992 victory, the 49ers have lost seven road games against the Vikings.

Perhaps 2024 reverses the trend, and the Niners can finally end the road losing streak. It's safe to say they're due when both teams square off from US Bank Stadium in Week 2 on Sept. 15.
