Cowboys refusing to admit defeat with Trey Lance is hilarious for 49ers fans
By Mike Luciano
The San Francisco 49ers can once again look down at the Dallas Cowboys, as Jerry Jones is going through the exact same stages of coping John Lynch went through as it pertains to quarterback Trey Lance. In Year 4, Lance still doesn't look like an NFL starter.
While Lance did pile up over 400 total yards in Dallas' final preseason game, those numbers were overshadowed by some ghastly interceptions. Lance, who threw just one college interception and three with the 49ers, tossed a shocking five picks in his duel against the Los Angeles Chargers.
All signs point to veteran Cooper Rush, who was made the backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott while Lance was inactive last year, once again retaining his old role. Despite that, Dallas is once again trying to convince themselves that Lance is eventually going to become a solid NFL quarterback.
Despite his five interceptions against Los Angeles, Lance was seemingly guaranteed a roster spot by Jones in an interview after the game. Don't worry, Cowboys. I'm sure he'll eventually become a No. 2 quarterback after his fourth season, three of which will be spent as an inactive in most games.
Cowboys trying to convince themselves ex-49ers bust Trey Lance can be good QB
Lance defenders will always point to his inexperience, as Tom Brady threw more passes in his final year with the Buccaneers than Lance has in high school, college, and the pros combined. However, those supporters may need to realize that despite immense physical talent and a gun for an arm, Lance can't get it done at this level.
Playing on a loaded North Dakota State team that has won nine FCS championships since 2011, and their run-heavy offense never asked him to carry the load as a pure passer. Finer areas of quarterback play, like being able to layer throws with touch or work through complicated multi-read plays effectively, seem to elude him.
If Lance, picked No. 3 overall in 2021 after a massive 49ers trade-up, is incapable of beating out a player like Rush to even earn QB2 work in his fourth season in the league, it's simply time for the NFL to admit he is never going to make good on the immense talent San Francisco and others saw from him in college.
At least Brock Purdy's emergence has the 49ers ready to compete for a championship instead of clawing out from under the wreckage of the Lance trade.
