CBS Sports' latest mock draft nets 49ers a Niner Noise-preferred prospect
By Peter Panacy
A recent mock NFL Draft has the 49ers grabbing a Niner Noise favorite in Round 1, Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan at No. 31 overall.
If you've perused NFL Draft content here at Niner Noise over the last few months, you'll know that Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan is one of the more sought-after prospects we've tabbed for the San Francisco 49ers at the end of Round 1.
From our own mock drafts and top targets, the 6-foot-5 and 325-pound lineman is a premier option for the Niners to upgrade their offensive line right now.
And it's not as if this is a lacking need.
San Francisco has to shore up the right side of its O-line this offseason, namely finding an upgrade over right tackle Colton McKivitz and a long-term answer at right guard, as the combination of Spencer Burford and Jon Feliciano isn't exactly a permanent fix.
Good thing this year's draft boasts one of the deepest and most talented O-line classes in recent memory.
The 49ers last drafted an O-lineman in Round 1 way back in 2018 when they made former Notre Dame tackle Mike McGlinchey their top selection. That mostly solved the need for five years, but it remains so again heading into 2024.
Sounds like CBS Sports draft analyst Kyle Stackpole is thinking the same way.
CBS Sports mocks Jordan Morgan to 49ers in 2024 NFL Draft
Stackpole isn't the first to mock Morgan to the Niners at No. 31 overall this April. Instead, Stackpole is merely the latest in a relatively long line of draft pundits who view the Arizona standout as a realistic option for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan at the tail end of Round 1.
Here's what Stackpole had to say about Morgan being the pick for San Francisco:
"The 49ers haven't drafted an offensive tackle since 2021, and that was in the fifth round. That changes with the selection of Jordan Morgan, who can compete for the right tackle job right away and hopefully become the long-term replacement for Trent Williams on the left side."
Both of Stackpole's key points make sense. Not only would Morgan be a plug-and-play upgrade over McKivitz, but the rookie could potentially be a long-term answer for the 49ers when Williams, 35 years old, inevitably calls it a career.
It wouldn't be surprising if Morgan isn't the only lineman the Niners select in this year's draft. In addition to needs at guard and center, San Francisco could also stand for some quality depth to bolster the line behind the starting five.
With 10 picks at their disposal, look for the 49ers to take advantage of the deep class, and don't be surprised if Morgan winds up headlining it.
