Cam Newton continues to chirp as Brock Purdy passes him on this key stat

It's somewhat ironic that mere weeks after Cam Newton criticized quarterback Brock Purdy as a game manager, that Purdy would take only 18 months to surpass him in a key statistic.

Former quarterback Cam Newton has been on the debunked "Borck Purdy is a game manager" train for a while, even while Purdy has..ahem managed to surpass him in this key stat.

Cam Newton is a personality that is never short of something to say, and it's no secret he's doubled down on his descrption of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy as merely a game manager.

While Newton claims that his description of Purdy is in no way perjorative, it's hard to take that at face value when he's also constantly diminishing the successes of Purdy this season.

Purdy helped the 49ers to two big comeback victories in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, so you'd think that the voices might be a little quieter right now. But then again, that isn't what Cam does.

Cam left no doubts on his position about Purdy, confirming that his opinion on the budding young quarterback hasn't changed:

"I’ve never said Brock Purdy was trash; what I did say is that Brock Purdy is a game manager. That’s not hate, that’s just what I feel to be facts. But I still reserve the right to say this: to be labeled a game changer, Brock Purdy has to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball. And that’s not the case."

Cam Newton

I don't want to be so bold as to say Newton is jealous of Purdy or resents his success. After all Cam has a lot to be thankful for given he's a former MVP in the league and took the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl.

But is it coincidence that Cam has come out swinging against Purdy at this very moment? Perhaps not, given that Purdy has equalled Newton in making the Super Bowl and actually has more playoff wins in two season than Newton has in his entire career.

No, that isn't a mistake. Purdy already has more playoff wins in his young career than Cam.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it might be a little bit close to home for Cam that Purdy has taken the 49ers as far as he's taken the Panthers and that he's spent no time at all to be more successful when it comes to the playoffs.

Ever since Purdy has exploded onto the NFL as one of the more impressive sports stories in recent memory as a Mr. Irrelevant that's gone far and beyond what anyone could think possible, there's been a determined few that are just as quick to try to tear him down.

But if Purdy is able to do something Cam has never been able to do and win the Super Bowl, in his second season no less, then Cam's rantings and raving (along with everyone else) will seem more and more to people like the sour grapes that they are.
