Brock Purdy is seeing dollar bills after lesser quarterback gets huge contract

The San Francisco 49ers have their quarterback of the future on a very affordable contract.

That will not last forever, though. After the Detroit Lions' Jared Goff got a huge contract, Brock Purdy is set to cash in on his great play next offseason.

Goff got a whopping four-year, $212 million contract from Detroit. Goff is a fine quarterback as he is coming off a season where he helped lead the Lions to an NFC Championship game they lost to the Niners.

While he is a good quarterback, Purdy is pretty universally regarded as a superior one. He has played very well ever since he took over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2022 season and has not looked back.

Looking at Purdy and Goff's respective stats from the 2023 season, it is clear Purdy was the superior quarterback.

In 2023, Purdy threw for 4,280 yards and completed 69.4 percent of his passes with 31 touchdown passes compared to 11 interceptions. His QBR was 72.8, which was the best in the NFL. He was also the first 49ers quarterback since Jeff Garcia to make a Pro Bowl and proved that he is the quarterback of the future for the Niners.

Goff's numbers are fairly similar. He threw for 4,575 yards and had 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3 percent of his passes. However, his QBR was 60.3, which was 11th best in the NFL.

Purdy's stats are better, but going off the eye test, it is clear that he just has a few more intangibles with his mental game than Goff even though Purdy is less experienced.

Part of the reason the Niners have been able to keep so many of their star players is because they have gotten this excellent play from Purdy while he is on his incredibly cheap rookie deal.

Next offseason, Purdy will likely receive a big extension, barring injury or a major setback or drop in quality of play.

This Goff deal sets the market for what Purdy could make, and he could even get a higher amount if he has a great 2024 season.
