We have heard about how San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is elite when it comes to processing info and thinking quick out on the field.

We got a small glimpse of that in his press conference this week when asked about a pass to wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

The play in question can be viewed here. It was a rare instance this season where Purdy and Aiyuk have been completely on the same page. There has seemed to be a little bit of a disconnect ever since Aiyuk signed his massive contract extension, but maybe he is breaking out of that.

The reporter asked Purdy about how Aiyuk was able to get so wide open and what he saw on the play. Brock gave a detailed analysis that can be viewed here.

In Brock’s answer, he breaks down the kind of defense he was faced with and how, once he recognized the coverage, it was simply a matter of waiting for Aiyuk to clear the linebacker so that he would be wide open to catch the pass.

I was at the game on Sunday and my seat was behind the defense, so I could see the play develop and saw that Aiyuk was right about to be open, and the next thing I knew, Purdy had already delivered the ball to him on the money.

This could seem like a small thing and is probably fairly basic for most NFL quarterbacks, but it is a great reminder of the preparation that goes into executing a play like that. The play seemed to be one of the ones that head coach and offensive play caller Kyle Shanahan scripts at the start of every game, so he surely went over the play in practice with Purdy.

The fact Purdy was able to so assuredly execute the play speaks to his strength in being able to process a lot of information quickly and deliver the goods, physically. While he certainly lacks some of the physical gifts that other quarterbacks in the league may possess, he makes up for it with his brain and ability to outthink opponents.

The fact he is able to do that at such a young age is really exciting because as he gets older, wiser, and more experienced he is only going to get better in that part of the game.
