Brandon Aiyuk takes good-faith measure with 49ers despite contract standoff

After much speculation about whether he would report or not, the most recent intel suggests that Brandon Aiyuk will be on hand for the start of training camp.

San Francisco 49ers veterans were due to report for training camp on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California, and due to the unsettled of his contract situation, the scuttlebutt has been focused on whether or not wide rceiver Brandon Aiyuk would be on hand with his teammates.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Aiyuk is indeed going to show up at camp in spite of there having been little to no traction on a long-term deal between he and the Niners over the last few months.

Rapoport specifically mentioned May as the last time the two parties had any contact about the contract.

All of this, of course, comes on the heels of Aiyuk officially requesting a trade a week ago and the 49ers responding that they have no intentions of trading their top wideout at this point in the offseason. There have also been reports that teams reached out prior to the draft in April, but San Francisco also rebuffed those conversations in hopes of signing Aiyuk to an extension.

With 2024 in mind, and with the fifth-year option already guaranteed for this season, there is little else that Aiyuk can do, but it was still a bit of a surprise that he plans on attending camp, even with the fines that can be acrued due to his absence (which could later be waived if a deal was struck between Aiyuk and the 49ers).

Time will tell if this decision by the wide receiver spurs action on the part of both parties, but expect this to look a lot like when fellow wide receiver Deebo Samuel showed up to camp after requesting a trade in the midst of his contract dispute back in 2022, when Samuel engaged in a "hold-in," where is physically was at the facility but not taking place in team drills.

Aiyuk's presence can hopefully make a difference as the process continues to move forward, but it certainly does not guarantee anything will get done in the weeks leading up to the start of the regular season.

Either way, it'll be a big one for both Aiyuk and the 49ers.
