49ers need to avoid penalties

Penalties were a huge backbreaker for the 49ers last Saturday, as they committed six penalties for 83 yards. That's almost the full length of the field of play given up in penalties.

Compare this to the Packers, who only gave up one penalty for 5 yards, and you realize the Niners need to play more disciplined in their upcoming conference championship game.

The worst penalty was probably the pass-interference call against cornerback Ambry Thomas, which gave 41 yards to the Packers and set them up to score a touchdown on the following play.

San Francisco will have to clean up the unnecessary penalties and play more disciplined, especially on defense against a Detroit offense that is much more potent than Green Bay. For reference, the Lions offense finished the regular season third overall in yards per game (right behind the 49ers).

Detroit also finished top-five in both rushing and passing yards per game in 2023.

To not give easy yards to Detroit's offense, the defensive backs of the 49ers will have to mind their hands and ensure they don't get careless holding or pass-interference calls against them.
